Most people thank God when it’s easy — but God is calling for something far more costly than convenience praise.

A Sacrifice, By Its Very Nature, Costs You Something
In Leviticus, there was no bloodless offering; the altar always demanded a price. So when Hebrews 13:15 tells us, “By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually,” notice that word continually. It includes the hard days. The days of loss. The days when the diagnosis came back wrong. That is precisely when your thanksgiving stops being a feeling and becomes a weapon. A German pastor named Dietrich Bonhoeffer discovered exactly this from the inside of a Nazi prison cell, where he was held for opposing Hitler’s regime. He had every reason for despair. Yet he wrote that gratitude was the key to spiritual survival, a weapon against hopelessness itself.
He deliberately anchored his mind in memories of music and family, refusing to let prison walls dictate the condition of his spirit. By choosing thanksgiving inside a cell that offered him nothing to be thankful for on the surface, Bonhoeffer found a strength his captors could never reach. Revelation 12:11 tells us how believers overcome the accuser: “by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.” Your thanksgiving in the trial is that testimony. It silences the accuser.
What This Means For You Today
Our flesh is wired toward the opposite response. Worry feels productive. Self-pity feels satisfying. Blame feels safe. Thanksgiving in hardship goes against every one of those natural impulses at once. In Leviticus, the worshiper laid his hand on the animal before it was ever offered — identifying with it. The sacrifice of praise works the same way: when you offer thanksgiving in your hardest season, you are laying your hand on it first — your fear, your grief — and choosing to give it over as worship rather than hold onto it as a grievance.
A Practical Step
Today, find the one thing you have been withholding praise over — the situation that still stings, the prayer still waiting. Name that withheld thing honestly, even if it still hurts to say it out loud. Speak your praise over it anyway — not because the pain is gone, but because He is still God inside it. Like Bonhoeffer, anchor your mind deliberately on one specific mercy you can still remember today.
