He Gave Thanks for What Wasn’t Enough | Day 14 Gratitude Devotional

Five loaves and two fish were nowhere near enough -- until Jesus gave thanks for them first. Discover the ACTS prayer pattern that positions your faith for multiplication.

Before the miracle came, Jesus gave thanks for what wasn’t enough.

John 6:11 — He Gave Thanks First

“And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples.” — John 6:11 (KJV)

Gratitude Activates Divine Flow

Five loaves. Two fish. Five thousand hungry souls. And He gave thanks first. The miracle did not precede the thanksgiving — it followed it. Before raising Lazarus, Jesus thanked the Father before a single stone was rolled away (John 11:41). The Greek word used, eucharisteo, means a deep, full-hearted thanksgiving. Andrew practically apologized for even mentioning the loaves and fish — “what are they among so many?” Jesus did not ask for more before He gave thanks. He gave thanks for exactly what was already in His hands, insufficient as it looked, and multiplication followed the thanksgiving.

There is a simple pattern the church has used for generations, spelled out in four letters: A-C-T-S. Adoration comes first — praising God simply for who He is. Confession comes next — being honest before Him about where you have fallen short. Then Thanksgiving — specifically naming what He has already done, the way Jesus named the loaves and fish before He ever multiplied them. And only then, Supplication — bringing your actual requests. Notice where thanksgiving sits: before your asking, not after it. As James 1:17 declares, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights.”

What This Means For You Today

Notice how often you say “I have to” — I have to go to work, I have to take care of the kids. Try replacing it, deliberately, with “I get to.” That small shift retrains your mind to see a privilege where it used to see only a burden. Today, take the loaves and fish in your own hands — whatever feels insufficient in your life right now — and give thanks for it out loud. Before the miracle. Not after.

A Practical Step

First, tonight, pray through all four letters slowly — Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication — resisting the urge to rush to the last one. Second, name specifically the “loaves and fish” you are holding right now that feel like not enough, and thank God for them exactly as they are. Third, watch for what multiplies once you have positioned your faith with thanksgiving instead of leading with your lack.

Key Takeaway

Gratitude is not a response to multiplication — it is the trigger.

Today’s Prayer

Father, we thank You now — for what we have, before we see what You will do with it. Teach us to pray in the order You designed: adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and then our requests, trusting that You multiply what we place gratefully in Your hands. In Jesus’ mighty Name, Amen.
